Spiritual State of the Meeting (1999)

York Monthly Meeting
Spiritual State of the Meeting Report ~
 1999
Old Friends readily quoted the Prophet Amos, who said, "Woe unto those who are comfortable in Zion." They believed that if you were too easy in your Meeting, you problably were not paying attention to what the Light demands of you. Friends at York take to heart this ancient advice.

Queries are stirring different Friends at different depths. We find ourselves awakening to callings and the ensuing struggles as we seek clearness and direction. We listen to all voices, large and small, persistent and fleeting and at times, find ourselves uncomfortable and questionoing as to where we are being led. The Meeting is often uneasy when concerns that seem to be of a political nature arise. There is a tension that pulls at us saying that we are not policy makers, but we must speak truth to power. This we can identify as our greatest spiritual struggle. Often uneasy or difficult situations propel us forward to new understandings of what our witness is and we cherish these times as gifts of growth. We look to the Light for guidance and pray for patience with one another as we find our way. Truth and unity is seldom an expedient ordeal.

We find comfort in our Meeting today and our membership is stable and growing. The vocal ministry that has blessed our Meeting is a welcomed gift from the Spirit that enriches our worship and enlightens our hearts. We are greatful for the Friends who lovingly care for the spiritual wellbeing of the Meeting.

Friends share hopes and aspirations for our Meeting. We would like our meeting house to be a place that meets everyone's needs. We strive to be a welcoming and nurturing community of believers seeking God's will. We want to be a spiritual fellowship that extends our testimonies to the outside community through social action, and also desire to be vibrant contribution to the wider Quaker world. We know that we have a real strength and vitality, but at times we are unsure of how to channel our energies into action.

We are not discouraged at our progress. In fact, we are more aware of God's grace and goodness which has brought us safe this far and we share an awareness and assurance that it is this same grace and love that will lead us to a place where we will fulfill our potential.
