Native Plant Sale
Native Plant Sale, April 12, 2008,
Saturday 10am to 4pm.
Members of York Friends Meeting will
hold their second native plant sale at the Meetinghouse at 135 W. Philadelphia
Street, York. We will have a large variety of native perennials for sale and a
limited selection of shrubs. Proceeds will be donated to York Friends' public
school environmental education outreach project.
Master Gardener Frank Linardi will be
present from 10am to 3pm to answer questions. He will provide literature from
Penn State about native plants. He will also bring an educational display
about invasive plants.
What are "native plants" and why
choose them for your gardens?
Native plants are those which belong in
a particular ecosystem (in our case the Chesapeake Bay watershed) and are
the species that were growing here before settlers, beginning in the
1600's, introduced plants from other parts of the world. Three very important
reasons to choose native plants are that they provide food and habitat for the
birds, animals, and insects that live in this ecosystem; they require little or
no fertilizing and watering once they are established; and they preserve the
unique character of our particular geographic area. They are also quite
beautiful, though often not as "showy" as more exotic species.
Choosing to use native plants in our
gardens is a personal and practical way to answer Quaker Query 12:
"Are you concerned for responsible use
of natural resources and their nurture for future generations? Do you try to
avoid wasteful consumption and pollution? Do you seek to preserve the beauty
and balance of God's world?"
